What Makes A Great Boss

A Great BossEvery company owes its success to the vision and bold leadership of the person at the top and the commitment and loyalty of the employees that do the hard work.
-

The boss is the lynchpin in setting the stage for success or failure.
-

Your level of education, your IQ, or your current title will not be the measure of your success as a great boss. Your success will be measured by every decision you make, every day, and how those decisions affect those that work for you.
-

Remember one thing, employees do not leave jobs they leave bosses. For every story I’ve heard about why people quit, it’s invariably because the boss made the job unbearable.
-

So, what can you do to be a great boss?
-

First, a great boss must have unshakable confidence, a clear vision and a road map to implement that vision, despite naysayers. The boss must communicate the vision in a way that inspires employees and emphasizes that achieving the goal depends upon them.
-

The language and intent of your message must be a we-focused, rather than an I-focused. Communicating in this way will excite, engage and fire-up the commitment of your employees.
-

Second, a great boss must have discipline and a deep well of energy.  You are the role model that others follow and your actions set the tone and culture of your company.
-

Third, a great leader values people and treats them with respect.  There is no room for bullying, yelling or belittling your employees in the scenario of a successful company.
-

Treating people fairly, being consistent, never devolving into emotional outbursts, even in times of great stress, will earn the trust and loyalty of your employees.
-

Acknowledging accomplishments, being timely with performance appraisals, and celebrating successes together, are all important to sustain high employee morale and to continue to build trust.
-

Lastly, being open to new ideas, encouraging brainstorming, creativity and listening, are all markers of an evolved management style.
